The law providing benefits to the survivors of public employees for Covid-related line-of-duty deaths is now effective through December 31, 2022.
On Friday, March 12, 2021,Governor Cuomo signed the legislation (Assembly Bill 3988 and Senate Bill 4691)into law as Chapter #78 of 2021.
Scores of public employees who selflessly worked the front lines during the Covid pandemic made the ultimate sacrifice as a result. While those who made that sacrifice can never be replaced, this law provides some relief to their survivors, and to those who may be afflicted and die in the future in service to the people of the great State of New York.
The enactment of this law was the number one legislative priority for the New York State Public EmployeeConference, an umbrella group comprising approximately 80 unions and groups representing a broad spectrum of hundreds of thousands of public employees.
We thank the governor, and the bill sponsors, Assemblyman Peter Abbate and Senator Andrew Gounardes for this important law.
