Legislative Directors,
Those of you who were in Puerto Rico will recall that the subject of Retiree Health Insurance was discussed, specifically with respect to the 2022 NYS Court of Appeals case, Donohue v. Cuomo. The case has brought this issue to the forefront. You will also recall that we elevated the issue of our opposition to any diminution of retiree health benefits to priority status in our 2023 NYSPEC Legislative Agenda.
At our upcoming NYSPEC Legislative Committee meeting following the annual legislative breakfast, Dave Davis. Esq., counsel to several NYSPEC member units, who has done an exhaustive analysis of this case, will be making a presentation outlining why it is essentially the proverbial canary in the coal mine regarding retired public employee health benefits.
Following the Retiree Health Insurance discussion, the NYSPEC Legislative Committee Subcommittees on Tier Equity and the Retired Peace Officers will meet.
